Two Manassas City Public Schools (MCPS) students were recently honored by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post for their success in a youth essay competition and premier scholarship program. Francis Cannon Post Post 7589 and Auxiliary held the 2016 Annual Education Awards Night on Saturday, December 3.

Mayfield Intermediate student Olesya Stavrov was awarded second place for an essay she submitted in the Patriot’s Pen Program, expressing her views on democracy. The theme for this year’s Patriot Pen program and writing contest was, “The America I Believe In”.

Brianna Stumpf, a senior at Osbourn High School, was awarded Honorable Mention for her essay submission in the Voice of Democracy Program. Students competed by writing and recording an audio essay on this year’s theme, “My Responsibility to America”.

Both programs are open to students enrolled in public, private, parochial high school or a home study program in the United States and its territories. Locally, MCPS was the only public education system with award recipients.
