Recently, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued an alert on a scam targeting Medicare. Scammers send out “recruiters” to different community events and even door-to-door to target older adults. They will ask you for your Medicare numbers, Social Security numbers and other personal information in exchange for FAKE DNA tests. They say this test will reveal information about your risk of diseases like cancer, and that it is completely covered by Medicare. Once they have your Medicare number, they will bill your Medicare account for THOUSANDS of dollars!
AS A REMINDER…
Medicare does not market DNA testing to the public.
- Never give anyone who calls or approaches you out of the blue any information like your
Medicare, bank account, credit card or Social Security number. Scammers can use your
information, steal your identity, get credit in your name, and take your money. - Treat your Medicare card just as you would a credit card or SSN card.
- Government agencies will rarely, if ever call you. If they do, it will be after they send you a letter.
- Anytime the “government” caller demands information or payment by wire transfer or gift card, it’s a scam.
If you have information on any scams, report it to the FTC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
