Traffic slowdowns and temporary stoppages are planned for I-66 westbound in Gainesville on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 30. The stoppages will occur between 11:00 a. m. and 12:00 noon for construction activities on the I-66 Outside the Beltway Project. The left lane of eastbound I-66 may also be closed near Route 29 in Gainesville. Crews constructing stormwater drain trenches for the future park and ride lot near the intersection of Route 29 and University Boulevard will be using small charges to blast underground rock.
Virginia State Police will pace westbound traffic from Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to Route 29 to a slow roll beginning at 11:00 a. m., with possible stoppages of up to 15 minutes possible during the blasting operations. Additionally, stoppages will occur on the ramp from Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway) to I-66 West beginning at 11:00 a. m.
Residents and drivers in the area may hear loud noises and should expect travel delays from the work. All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
The first part of the University Boulevard park and ride lot will open in 2019 with 960 parking spaces to serve carpool, vanpool, and commuter bus travelers. The lot will provide more than 2,000 parking spaces when the express lanes open in December 2022.
