Students at Tyler Elementary practicing mindfulness

Stress, anxiety, frustration — we all feel these emotions. Students do too. In fact, 40 percent of students report feeling anxious and stressed on a daily basis, according to Dr. Maria Fleshood, whose article is published in the Virginia Journal of Education.

Mindfulness is a classroom tool that addresses distraction, anxiety and behavior. These calming techniques foster qualities of resilience, curiosity, reflection and focus. Tyler Elementary is incorporating this practice into the daily routine and finding that even five to 10 minutes of mindfulness a day is benefiting students and staff alike.
