Cakes By Happy Eatery will host a Mid-Autumn Festival Open House & Moon Cake Tasting from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the bakery in Manassas (9685 Liberia Avenue).
Many Americans first learned of Moon Festival from the movie “Crazy Rich Asians.” The movie created new interest in this celebration, and now “Moonfest Parties” are held all over the country. It’s always on the first full moon of the fall season — and it’s early this year (Sept. 10)! The holiday is a traditional Chinese/Vietnamese fall festival celebrating the arrival of the new season.
What is the Mid-Autumn Festival?
The Mid-Autumn Festival is an East Asian celebration, particularly in China and. Vietnam. It’s the second largest holiday in China, after Chinese New Year. Mid-Autumn Festival started 1,000 years ago as a holiday to worship the moon for its harvest crop and celebration of hard work. The present-day celebration is about family gatherings.
What is a Moon Cake?
Moon cakes are small palm-size round pastries with a thin crust and dense filling. They are cut into small petit-four bite size pieces, best paired with hot tea. The custom is for all people to eat mooncakes and exchange them as gifts.
