On Friday, February 17, Mountain View Elementary School will invite students, parents and members of the community to visit its first Living Museum, a showcase of students and student-created research projects celebrating African American achievers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“I am excited about this year’s Living Museum because it connects our students with people who have achieved greatness in science, technology, engineering and math. This opportunity inspires students to work toward their goals as they research what others have done in these important disciplines,” said Mountain View’s principal, Adriane Harrison. This is the second year that MVES has hosted a school wide program in recognition of Black History Month. “We look forward to growing the celebration each year,” added Harrison.

All MVES students are invited to research an African-American achiever in the fields of science, technology, engineering or math. On February 17, students will dress as their achiever and display their project on a tri-fold backboard. As visitors to the museum circulate, students will give a brief oral presentation about their achiever. Each student that participates will receive a certificate of participation and a children’s book about an African-American achiever in STEM.

Members of the community are invited to visit the Living Museum even if they do not have a student currently attending Mountain View. Entrance to the museum is free and there will be a sit-down dinner served at 5:30 p. m. prior to the opening of the museum at 6:30 p.m. The dinner costs $10 per plate which includes a drink and dessert. All dinner reservations must be made in advance by e-mailing the school at Mountain View Elementary School is the recipient of the 2017 Future of Educational Technology STEM Excellence Award for elementary schools in the United States.
