Lisa Thorne-Izes, the new director of financial services for Prince William County Public Schools, is proud to be following in the footsteps of her parents, both educators. Her dad taught science before moving into an energy management role, and her mom taught pre-school students with special needs.
“I like being able to continue the legacy of my parents in a different capacity,” Thorne-Izes said. “They are very proud. I bring to the role a teacher’s perspective, from them, along with my financial and budget perspective.”
After serving PWCS for 12 years in a variety of roles, including chief accountant, budget administrative coordinator, and supervisor of accounting services, Thorne-Izes was recently promoted to director of financial services.
She said she took the route less traveled to her new role. Born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and raised in Roanoke, Virginia, Thorne-Izes headed off to Virginia Tech. However, she didn’t have the opportunity to finish college until many years later, attending school as a single mom of two children.
“I am a story of persistence and perseverance,” she said. “I took a tough route.”
After working as a bank teller, Thorne-Izes said she realized she enjoyed working with numbers. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting, and is a Certified Public Accountant. Before coming to PWCS, Thorne-Izes worked for KPMG, one of the largest accounting firms in the world, and worked for Prince William County.
“I am very analytical,” she said. “I like puzzles and problem-solving. I was always good at math.”
She said she is looking forward to making a positive impact in her new role.
“We will be working on some customer service improvement through implementing efficiencies for a quicker turnaround time,” she said.
