Dozens of people gathered on Church Street yesterday to celebrate the grand opening of Moo Moo Junction, a veteran-owned small business serving up homemade treats in Historic Manassas. Locals gathered in line from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to try free ice cream cones, sundaes and milkshakes (and to meet Moo Moo, the lovable mascot).

For owner Jim Smith, who also owns Acqtel Realty next door and has owned the building for a year, the ice cream is just the “tip of the iceberg.” Moo Moo Junction plans to expand its menu to include wraps, sandwiches and Chicago-style hotdogs, even potentially offering catering services down the road.

“I almost tore the building down, and then one day I was just standing in there and there were so many people walking by that I thought we should make use of the space,” he said. “And I think we’ve done that. It’s taken on a whole different function now, and we’re pretty pleased with the way it’s turned out.”

Moo Moo Junction currently has 15 employees, most of whom are local teens. But that’s not the only group Smith hopes to target.

“I’m a retired veteran myself,” he said. “So I’d really like to target disabled veterans and seniors along with the younger crowd. I’d like for it to expand to those other two groups as well.”

Moo Moo Junction is open Monday through Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information, contact Jim Smith at
