Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center and Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center have both been awarded ‘A’ grades in patient safety from The Leapfrog Group. Leapfrog is a national nonprofit health care ratings organization. They evaluate the safe care practices of more than 2,600 hospitals every six months and assign a score of A to F based on their findings.

‘A’ Grades from Leapfrog

For the Fall 2018 Hospital Safety Grades Survey, Prince William Medical Center and Haymarket Medical Center were among the top 32 percent of hospitals nationwide to receive ‘A’ ratings for their commitment to patient safety. This recognizes proactive measures to reduce errors, infections and accidents that would be potentially harmful to patients. Hospitals awarded top marks in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades have achieved the highest safety standards in the U.S.

Stephen Smith, M.D., is president and COO of Novant Health UVA Prince William Medical Center and Haymarket Medical Center. He said, “It is an honor to earn ‘A’ grades from The Leapfrog Group recognizing our continued dedication to keeping our medical centers safe for patients. This achievement affirms that we are making the right decisions regarding patient safety. It demonstrates that our dedicated medical staff and team members continue to provide our patients with the safest and highest quality of care.”

“We are so very proud of the work our teams are doing to provide quality care with patient safety as the highest priority. This achievement assures our community members that our processes are based on the highest safety standards,” said Michelle Strider, director of clinical quality, Novant Health UVA Health System.

Virginia ranked third among states based on the number of ‘A’ hospitals compared to the total number of hospitals in the state for the fall 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. A top grade of ‘A’ helps patients assess the safety of a hospital – the higher the grade, the safer the hospital.
