MANASSAS, Va. — Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative urges consumers to take advantage of Virginia’s sales tax holiday from Friday, Aug. 6, through Sunday, Aug. 8, to purchase ENERGY STAR certified appliances and tools, as well as products used for hurricanes and other storms. Northern Virginians will save the commonwealth’s 6% sales tax.
ENERGY STAR Certified Products
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy’s ENERGY STAR symbol indicates a product is energy efficient. The product thereby saves money and helps protect the environment. To qualify for Virginia’s Sales Tax Holiday, products displaying the ENERGY STAR label must not exceed $2,500 per item and must be purchased for noncommercial home or personal use. Products include:
- Air conditioners
- Ceiling fans
- Washing machines/clothes washers
- Light bulbs

Eligible Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Products
- Portable generators — $1,000 or less per item
- Gas-powered chainsaws — $350 or less per item
- Chainsaw accessories — $60 or less per item
- Other specified hurricane preparedness items — $60 or less per item
