The Virginia Cooperative Extension Prince William, the Prince William County Employees Credit Union and local banks Burke & Herbert and United Bank are working together to encourage the community to focus on saving money during Prince William County Saves Week, Feb. 25 through March 2, 2019.

Victoria Neeley, financial education program manager for the extension, said Prince William Saves is part of the larger America Saves program, where people pledge to save and may sign up to receive ideas and tools to help them reach their goals. “America Saves is promoting this nationwide. In the Prince William region, America Saves is partnering with Burke and Herbert, United Bank, PWC Employee Credit Union and VCE Prince William. Registered savers will participate with the rest of the savers across the country to dedicate one week on focusing on savings.”
The extension is encouraging people to sign up online and set a savings goal, Neeley said. “In general, writing down a goal helps people to be more successful in achieving them. If they sign up to save, then there is a better chance that they will achieve that goal,” Neeley said.
According to Neeley, it takes about two minutes to sign up at princewilliamsaves.org.
People who sign up may also enter the #ImSavingForSweepstakes run by America Saves. To participate in the contest, which runs from Feb. 20 through April 30, people would need to sign up and share their goals on social media using #ASW19. Participants could win between $250 and $750. Savers may also share their successes with pictures or videos using the #ImSavingForSweepstakes to be eligible for the contest.
America Saves will also send those who sign up savings reminders, tips and new tools. “This will give savers support via Twitter, email or on Facebook. Sharing savings stories will also grow everyone’s savings momentum and give people fresh ideas,” Neeley said.
