The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) announced in November 2017 that the Town of Occoquan received the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2017-2018 annual budget. The Town first received this award in 2015 for its 2015-2016 annual budget. In addition, Occoquan’s Budget Committee, consisting of Mayor Elizabeth A.C. Quist, Councilmember Jim Drakes and Town Manager Kirstyn Jovanovich, was awarded a certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation for its role in the Town’s nationally recognized accomplishment.
“I’m very pleased that the Town of Occoquan has, again, been awarded this distinction. It is a credit to the Town Staff and Budget Committee for their efforts, and a testament to the Council’s desire to be transparent, accountable, and communicative,” said Mayor Quist.
The award represents a significant achievement, reflecting the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
In order to receive the budget award, the Town had to satisfy nationally recognized expert guidelines for effective budget presentation. Occoquan’s budget presentation rated “proficient” in all four categories designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.
“The GFOA, which consists of financial officers and experts from across the United States and Canada, has once again recognized that Occoquan has an outstanding method of budget reporting,” said Town Manager Kirstyn Jovanovich. “I am proud of our staff, Council, and community for producing an award-winning budget presentation for the third year in a row and hope to continue to improve and enhance the process and document in the future.”
