The Prince William County School Board recently passed a resolution proclaiming October as Energy Action Month. The proclamation follows suit from a designation by the President of the United States and the U. S. Department of Energy. Led by the energy management team, several schools are planning fun, educational activities.
Energy Management Administrative Coordinator Brian Conrad said, “We believe our students can be ‘agents of change.’ We teach them to understand the importance of conservation of natural resources and challenge them to contribute to reduce our PWCS community’s carbon footprint for a brighter and sustainable future. We support STEM curriculum and many of our Divisionwide energy conservation measures are in line with Virginia Science SOLs.”
Many of the lessons are created by the team’s education coordinators who are former classroom teachers. The educators plan to share lessons about energy conservation habits that are good tips for both at school and at home and encourage the growth of a sustainable culture. The presentations include activities like upcycling projects such as showing students how a fun art project only needs a little bit of glue, recycled paper towel rolls and some creativity. Another example is how to make a bag out of an old T-shirt.
Several elementary schools will also be treated to the EcoHero Show. Brett “Mr. Eco” Edwards, an educator and environmentalist, will perform his lively show and teach students about the importance of sustainability.
The team will also continue providing weekly tips and “Did You Know” information through their social media and staff communications.
