The Police Department today announced a partnership with Nextdoor (nextdoor.com), the private social network for neighborhoods, to promote county-wide as well as neighbor-to-neighbor public-safety communications. This partnership with Nextdoor will enable the Department’s Crime Prevention Unit to use Nextdoor to build stronger, safer communities with the help of county residents.
“We are always seeking innovative and collaborative ways to increase safety for our residents,” said Sergeant Sarah Rolle, supervisor of the Department’s Crime Prevention Unit. “With Nextdoor, we can help empower neighbors to keep their communities safe and give them the ability to collaborate on neighborhood watch efforts.”
Around the country, Nextdoor has proven to be an essential and well-adopted tool for residents. The Prince William County Police Department joins more than 2,400 public agencies across the country who are using Nextdoor for public agencies to build stronger relationships with their residents.
With Nextdoor, Prince William County residents can create private neighborhood websites to share information, including neighborhood public-safety issues, community events, local services, and even lost pets. The Police Department will be able to post information, such as important news, services, programs, and free events to Nextdoor neighborhoods within the county.
How does it work? Nextdoor is free for residents and the Prince William County Police Department. Each neighborhood in the County has its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website, accessible only to residents of that neighborhood. Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor websites and the Police Department will not be able to access residents’ websites, contact information, or content.
All members must verify that they live within the neighborhood before joining Nextdoor. Information shared on Nextdoor is password-protected and cannot be accessed by Google or other search engines.
How do I sign up? Those interested in joining their neighborhood’s Nextdoor website can visit nextdoor.com and enter their street address.
