New Equipment Allows for Faster, Safer Cancer Treatment
Woodbridge, VA – Potomac Radiation Oncology Center, a service of Inova and Sentara Healthcare, treated its first patient in its new location in the Century Medical Building on Wednesday, February 27th. The Center will offer the latest cancer fighting technology, the Trilogy™ linear accelerator and imaging system from Varian Medical Systems.
“We will be able to provide our patients with faster daily treatment and fewer side effects due to decreased exposure to the surrounding healthy tissues,” said Dr. Susan Boylan, radiation oncologist and Medical Director of the Center.
The Trilogy system combines a treatment machine with an imaging machine. It enables the radiation therapist to pinpoint where the tumor is–at the moment of treatment–and position patients very precisely for delivering radiation doses with submillimeter accuracy reducing radiation to surrounding healthy tissue. The Trilogy system has a more tightly focused beam and can deliver doses at least 60 percent faster than conventional accelerators to reduce the effects of tumor motion, shorten treatment times and enhance patient comfort.
Potomac Radiation Oncology Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology and has board certified radiation therapists and physicists on staff. In addition, the team includes a dosimetrist, an Oncology Certified (OCN) registered nurse and a registered dietitian. A specially trained and certified pet therapy dog provides canine companionship to patients and families during treatment.
Potomac Radiation Oncology Center is located in the Century Medical Building at 2280 Opitz Boulevard in Suite 120 on the campus of Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge. Free parking is available in front of the Center. A free courtesy shuttle takes patients to and from other medical appointments at Sentara.
