On behalf of Prince William Water, this office is informing you that the annual water system flushing program will begin on Monday, March 30.
Each spring, Prince William Water takes proactive steps to ensure customers’ drinking water remains clean and fresh for daily use, following industry best practices. As part of this process, teams flush water mains by briefly opening fire hydrants to allow water to flow freely, helping to remove residual sediment and minerals from pipes throughout the service area. This year’s flushing program will take place from March 30 through May 4.
In coordination with this effort, wholesale drinking water providers will temporarily change the primary disinfectant used in the treatment process. This disinfectant conversion works in tandem with hydrant flushing to more effectively clean the system.
During this time, customers may notice the following:
- Crews and Prince William Water vehicles in their neighborhoods operating hydrants
- A slight chlorine taste or odor in tap water due to the disinfectant change (this can be minimized by using a water filter or allowing water to sit uncovered for a few hours)
- Temporary cloudiness in tap water, often caused by aeration (running cold water for approximately two minutes typically resolves this)
