AARP Virginia is encouraging Northern Virginia residents to take a simple step to protect themselves from identity theft while helping neighbors facing food insecurity through four free Fill the Bins with Paper and Food events this fall.
The events offer participants an opportunity to securely dispose of sensitive documents and donate nonperishable food items to local community pantries. Attendees may bring up to three boxes or bags of documents for shredding, including bank statements, canceled checks, credit card offers and receipts containing personal information. Participants are also encouraged to bring nonperishable, unexpired food items to support local food banks and pantries.
“Identity thieves often rely on information that people discard without realizing its value,” said Amber Nightingale, senior associate state director for community outreach with AARP Virginia. “These events make it easy for people to protect themselves while supporting organizations that help local families in need.”
Each event is free and open to the public. Registration is required and includes selecting a preferred drop-off time to help ensure smooth traffic flow. Registrants will also be entered for a chance to win a paper shredder.

AARP Virginia provides free resources and programs to help people safeguard their finances and personal information. The Fill the Bins events also help address hunger by supporting community food pantries that serve residents throughout Northern Virginia.
