This summer, PWPL invites you to explore new worlds, discover new favorites, and celebrate the stories you love with the return of two popular genre programs: Summer Scares and FanFest. Whether you’re in the mood for spine-chilling reads or vibrant graphic storytelling, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Summer Scares is a nationwide initiative sponsored by the Horror Writers Association (HWA) that encourages readers of all ages to immerse themselves in horror and dark fiction during the summer months. Alongside curated book displays and staff ready to share their favorite chilling reads, PWPL once again offers a full lineup of Summer Scares programming for all ages. From Friday, July 10, through Saturday, August 8, readers are invited to try something new—whether that means picking up your first horror novel or joining others at a fun program. As part of this year’s celebration, PWPL’s Important Library Stuff podcast features an interview with Summer Scares spokesperson Jennifer McMahon, New York Times bestselling author of 12 suspense novels, including “The Winter People” and “Promise Not to Tell.” Listen wherever you get your podcasts or at pwpl.buzzsprout.com.
From eerie tales to illustrated adventures, the excitement continues with PWPL’s third annual FanFest. This all-ages celebration of comics, manga, and graphic novels returns as part book fair, part comic convention, and 100% fun. Join us at Bull Run Library on Saturday, July 18, from 11 am. to 3 p.m. for a full day of activities and special events. Explore the Vendor Hall to browse booksellers, enjoy free giveaways, and spin the prize wheel, or stop by Artist Alley to meet talented local artists and see their work up close. Food trucks will also be on site with refreshments available for purchase. Don’t miss the opportunity to take part in a hands-on comics workshop with graphic novelist Robin Ha at 11 a.m.
Together, these programs offer a chance to discover new genres, connect with fellow readers, and celebrate the communities that bring stories to life. Whether you’re a longtime fan of horror and comics or curious to explore something new, PWPL is proud to provide welcoming, all-ages experiences that bring people together and highlight our extensive print and digital collections.
