Ramp access from Route 28 North to I-66 East will change slightly beginning on or about Friday, Nov. 22. The current ramp entrance will close and drivers will continue north to the next traffic signal. Drivers will make a right and merge with vehicles accessing the I-66 East ramp from Route 28 South.
Drivers turning from Route 28 South to I-66 East should be alert for traffic merging onto the ramp from the right.
This traffic pattern will be in place while the new alignment of northbound Route 28 and ramps to I-66 are constructed.
The I-66/Route 28 Interchange is being rebuilt for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. When construction is complete in 2022, the new configuration will be a multi-level interchange. Eleven new bridges will provide separate access to and from the I-66 express and general purpose lanes. Additionally, Walney and Braddock Roads will be reconnected via an overpass across Route 28, with direct access to and from I-66.
Drivers should expect additional construction-related detours and traffic changes as work progresses at the Route 28/I-66 Interchange.
