Demolition of Bridge Piers Continues During Overnight Hours at I-66/Route 29 (Lee Highway) Interchange in Centreville Feb. 4 to 6

Demolition of old I-66 bridge piers and abutment will require Route 29 (Lee Highway) North in Centreville to be reduced to a single lane during the overnight hours Thursday, Feb. 4, through Saturday, Feb. 6. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area and should consider using alternate routes. Details include:

Thursday, Feb. 4, through Saturday, Feb. 6 | Route 29 North at I-66

  • Northbound Route 29 will be reduced to one travel lane from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, and from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, and Saturday, Feb. 6, for bridge demolition.
This work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
The I-66 bridges over Route 29 are being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridges are being lengthened, widened, and raised to accommodate the new Express Lanes and provide room for any future mass transit along I-66 and future widening of Route 29. This work is being done in phases in order to maintain traffic on I-66 throughout construction.

New, Temporary Ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street North and South Opens on or about Sunday, Feb. 7

Drivers exiting I-66 West to Nutley Street North and South will use a new, temporary ramp beginning on or about Sunday, Feb. 7. All traffic heading to Nutley Street will use the same ramp for northbound and southbound travel. Drivers heading to southbound Nutley Street will use a temporary traffic signal to turn left to go south. These changes are needed for reconstruction of the Nutley Street Interchange as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. This work has been rescheduled from last weekend due to inclement weather.
The current ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street North will be closed between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 6 and 7, for paving work necessary to implement the change.
Starting on or about the evening of Sunday, Feb. 7, drivers should expect the following new traffic pattern, weather permitting:

New Ramps for I-66 West to Nutley Street North and South

  • The current ramp from I-66 West to northbound Nutley Street will close and be replaced by a new ramp located slightly after (west of) the current exit.
  • Drivers will access northbound Nutley Street by using the new exit ramp, then staying to the right.
  • Drivers will access southbound Nutley Street by using the new ramp, staying to the left, then turning left at a temporary traffic signal

The relocated I-66 West to Nutley Street ramp and a new ramp/traffic signal to reach Nutley Street South are planned to open Sunday, Feb. 7.

Ramp closure and detour details to implement the traffic pattern change include:

Saturday, Feb. 6, and Sunday, Feb. 7 | Ramp from I-66 West to Nutley Street North

  • The ramp will be closed between 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for paving operations.
  • Drivers will be detoured farther west on I-66 to the exit for Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Metrorail, stay to the right on to Country Creek Road and continue on to Virginia Center Boulevard, then turn left at the traffic signal on to Nutley Street North.
  • Drivers headed to southbound Nutley Street will follow the same detour, but turn right from Virginia Center Boulevard on to Nutley Street South.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
This temporary traffic pattern is necessary to allow construction of the new Nutley Street Interchange while keeping Nutley Street open to traffic, and will remain in place for approximately 18 months. When construction is complete, the interchange will feature two roundabouts, which will provide safer, more efficient travel for vehicles entering and exiting I-66, and improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians traveling on Nutley Street.
Drivers should always use caution and pay attention to lane markings and roadway signs in construction work zones.
