Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) earlier this month sent a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies to urge the subcommittee to “include the highest possible level of appropriations to combat gang activity within the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs and the State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance Programs.” Congresswoman Comstock made the following comments:
“MS-13 gang activity has risen in the Northern Virginia region with recent gang-related murders in Fairfax and Prince William Counties. Fairfax County Police Chief Ed Roessler has said the gang activity is ‘getting out of control and we need to stop it.’ It has been reported that MS-13 is recruiting children starting in the fifth grade. MS-13 also participates in human trafficking, specifically targeting young girls in our communities. Our local law enforcement agencies are on the front lines every day combating gang activity and the Federal government must do all it can to provide them more resources so they can effectively do their jobs and, ultimately, eliminate gangs like MS-13.”
