Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Bipartisan Budget Act by a vote of 240-186 early Feb. 9.
“Today’s vote was a victory for our military men and women and stops the dangerous defense sequestration cuts that were damaging our military readiness and our troops. The Armed Forces have seen approximately 80 peacetime casualties in part because they lack the proper resources for training, maintenance, and modernization. This is unacceptable. This legislation will provide certainty and give the necessary funds that Secretary Mattis requested for our Armed Forces so they can rebuild the military and keep America safe.
“The budget also will include support for our priorities such as transportation and infrastructure projects; medical research at NIH; funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (“CHIP”) and community health care centers; vital disaster relief funding for Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and additional resources for battling the opioid epidemic. This bipartisan legislation will also protect the compensation and the retirement programs of our federal employees who will implement these important missions.
“Combined with the benefits and economic growth we are already seeing from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, these measures will make our communities safer, more prosperous, and healthier.”
