In the 2010 Bike to Work Day, there was one pit stop in Prince William County. This year, there will be 10 pit stops for the Friday, May 18 event, where people can stop for refreshments, maybe pick up a T-shirt or just rest for a bit as they bike to work or a nearby transit station.

George Phillips, a transportation planner with the Prince William Planning Department, said interest in Bike to Work Day, a regional event, has been “growing every year” since it started with 63 registered riders in Prince William County. In 2017, rider registration in the county stood at 208.

Phillips said biking around the county has gotten easier over the years. The Prince William County Department of Transportation has been putting sidewalks and trails alongside new roads during construction for some time. “It’s getting easier. I think as facilities are built and put in place, we’ll see more people using bikes. Now we have enough trails where people can bike to work.”

While most people don’t bike to points as far away as Washington, D.C., they might easily be able to bike to a train station. Pit stops are set up this year at the Woodbridge, Rippon, Manassas and Manassas Park Virginia Railway Express stations to encourage people to consider the possibilities, Phillips said. “We are looking to be multi-modal. We’re all about transit, pedestrian and biking facilities, and certain trains allow bikes on board.”

The main goal of the free event, which is sponsored by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, is to raise awareness. “It’s all about encouraging people to bike more and to know where they can bike.”

There are other reasons to promote Bike to Work Day, Phillips said. “One, it reduces congestion. Two, it helps the environment, and three, it’s good for you to ride a bike.”
