The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has launched the COVID-19 Serology Project to get a better estimate of the total number of people who have been infected with COVID-19 in Virginia. VDH will enroll a total of 5,000 participants statewide to complete a short questionnaire and have a blood sample tested for COVID-19 antibodies. All participants will be enrolled, tested, and preliminary results released before July 31, 2020.

Sentara Healthcare will support VDH by collecting samples for 1,000 tests in the Eastern region of Virginia. Antibody testing checks to see if a person had a COVID-19 infection in the past. COVID-19 antibody testing is still new, and there are a lot of unknowns. Getting a positive antibody test still does not mean that individual is protected against the virus in the future. Testing a large group of individuals can still help public health officials determine how prevalent the virus was in the community.

Patient enrollment is very limited in this project and we must meet pre-specified quotas by age and race/ethnicity to be representative of the population in each region. Eligible participants will be identified at outpatient clinics during an existing patient visit. There is no other enrollment opportunity for this project.
