For many Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center patients, the Sentara Cancer Network Resource Center helps provide peace of mind throughout their cancer journey. And peace of mind is a key ingredient in healing.

“The Sentara Cancer Resource Center is a place that’s built around the patient’s needs,” said Deana Henry, RN, OCN, CHPN, Oncology Nurse Navigator. “Particularly the patient and their loved ones who are going through a cancer diagnosis and treatment. It’s a place for them to come to receive education and support, and sometimes just to rest between appointments in a place that doesn’t look like a doctor’s office.”

A Multitude of Services

The center treats people and their families holistically, not just their diagnosis.

“The Sentara Cancer Resource Center is a hub of activity,” said Heather Byrne, MSN, RN, Breast Cancer Oncology Nurse Navigator. “We have yoga classes for patients in active treatment for their cancer. We
have support groups that meet there. We have conferences there. We have access to supplies and equipment that might be needed specifically by our cancer patients.”

Dealing with paperwork is another aspect of cancer the center helps patients tackle.

“We have computers and a fax machine for patients to access as they’re trying to navigate some of the paperwork that’s necessary,” said Byrne, who has been a nurse for 36 years and has been working at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center since 2010.

All at No Cost to Patients

The center, which opened in 2019, was built through grant funding from the Potomac Health Foundation.
