For the 13th consecutive year, the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) has presented Prince William County Service Authority’s H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility (Mooney AWRF) with its Platinum Peak Performance Award. The prestigious award recognizes Mooney’s 100 percent compliance with stringent federal and state wastewater environmental treatment standards. NACWA made the announcement this week at its 2022 Utility Leadership Conference held in Seattle.

Mooney AWRF is one of only 73 member utilities out of 350 nationwide to go five years or more with no violations of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) regulations at the close of 2021. The Service Authority’s wastewater treatment process significantly reduces the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus released into Neabsco Creek, which is a tributary of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.

“The Service Authority is honored to receive this distinction for the 13th consecutive year. This award recognizes the hard work and dedication of every employee at our H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility,” said Service Authority General Manager/CEO Calvin D. Farr, Jr., PE.  “Each day our mission is to provide safe, reliable clean water services while demonstrating our commitment to environmental stewardship.”

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality administers the permit at the state level, requiring all water reclamation facilities located in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed to reduce levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater during the treatment process before returning it to the environment. An excess of these nutrients in water can cause an overgrowth of algae, which can reduce the amount of oxygen aquatic life needs to survive.
