Do you ever feel a bit like a stray Walmart bag, accidentally dropped on the side of the road and floating across the lanes of I-95 without direction? Okay, perhaps you don’t feel quite that floaty and directionless, but maybe you could use a little more purpose in your life. It’s time to start living life with intention and filling your days with purpose. Karen David of Live Life Well, LLC offers seven great ways to get started.
- Consider your values. What are your deepest beliefs and values? Write them down and think about whether your daily actions match up with your personal core values. Are you sticking to your beliefs or are you letting others direct your flow? It’s time to adhere to what’s right for you. Let those values shine through in your actions, thoughts and priorities. Aligning your job, hobbies, meditations and activities with your values can create huge shifts in your life.
- Set goals for yourself. Back to the plastic bag: Someone floating through life like that is lacking direction and not working toward anything in particular. What do you want to do and achieve? Write down your goals and a list of your daily priorities. Take steps (even if they are baby steps) to get closer to those goals every day.
- Be present in the moment. Don’t spend your time thinking about yesterday or only dreaming of tomorrow. Live for now! Soak in the full joy of your experiences by focusing on what is happening right in front of you.
- Practice meditation and mindfulness. Both of these practices can keep you centered and help you with number 3 above. There are great apps like Calm and Headspace to offer you guided meditations and mindfulness practices. Or simply make it a habit to sit in stillness and silence for a few minutes today — even better if you can do this out amongst nature.
- Achieve good work/life balance. It’s hard to live with purpose if you’re only doing one thing. Limit your work hours. Schedule time with family and friends. Block out space in your calendar for hobbies and to be alone. And make sure to add in that new meditation practice a few times a week! Balance is necessary for your true self to evolve and be at peace.
- Dive into your passion. What are you passionate about? Is it art, nature, animals or volunteering? Are you making time for your passions regularly? Joy and fulfillment come from those activities we feel a calling to do. Listen to that calling and jump in full force!
- Make a difference. There is no greater satisfaction or feeling of purpose in life than when you give to others. Volunteer. Stick to your beliefs and make the world a better place with the skills and talents you have. Let those values change your community, country or even the world.
Could you use more guidance to help you fill your days with purpose? Schedule a wellness appointment, and together we’ll set goals, create priorities and map out a plan for your best life.
