Victoria Wu and her sister Emily, owners of Manassas-based Cakes By Happy Eatery (CBHE), have been working all year with ACTS to provide fresh baked food every week to community groups picked by the ACTS/Prince William Food Rescue staff. For Christmas and New Year’s Eve, they will be joined by five of their neighbors in a special holiday effort to bring warm and cheer to those in need.

“This has become our new tradition every Thursday since the COVID crisis started,” said Victoria, who is the
unofficial ringleader of this tight family-run and staffed operation. “We’ve been able to keep going right
through the crisis since March, and we want to help out the local community any way we can.”

For the two-week holiday period (Dec. 24 and 31), CBHE is joined by Pinoy Market & Café, Uncle Rico’s Cantina, Sam’s Southern Eatery, Famous Kabob and Bella Vita. Wu points out that the merchant community in Manassas is very tight knit and community-oriented. This is just one example of the ongoing generosity of the small business community in the area.

On Dec. 24, the Wu Sisters will share their holiday tradition of gourmet Gingerbread House Cookies. The specific list of all other donations is not yet available.

“We’re very thankful for the collaboration with CBHE and all the other businesses to get fresh food to those in need during these especially trying times,” said Aaron Tolson, Program Director for the ACTS Food  Rescue Program. “There is always a need for this service, and it is growing a bit faster than usual because of COVID.”

The cooking always starts at 10:00 a.m., with the ACTS Food Rescue Heroes (program volunteers) picking up the weekly item between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. the same day. The food will again go to the East End Mobile Home Park for both holiday weeks.

“Week to week, we kind of decide what we’re in the mood to do in terms of an item,” said Victoria. “We know pies and cakes are at a premium during the holidays, and we want to cover all the classics.”

Cakes By Happy Eatery plans to continue to lead this effort well beyond the holidays, and the menu will
continue to change every week. Their items have included a wide array of items gourmet pies, turkey pot pie, bakery donuts and pasta salad, based on what ACTS needs group by group. The focus is on families hit hard by the economic impact of the COVID crisis. For further information, visit cakesbyhappyeatery.com.
