59-year Old Geotechnical Firm Ushers in a New Era with Diverse Leadership
Soil Consultants Engineering (SCE), a geotechnical engineering firm specializing in on-site testing and inspection of new construction, has received national certification as a Women-Owned Business by the Small Business Administration in their effort to promote diversity among industries where woman-ownership has been historically underrepresented.
The SBA certification for a women-owned business is one of the most recognizable and sought-after of its kind. “The certification from SBA is a rigorous and thorough process,” said Jennifer Smith, CEO of SCE. “We are proud to be certified as one of the few woman-owned firms in our industry.”
Over almost 60 years, SCE has provided engineering services for both private corporations and public agencies throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Public agencies include Fairfax County, Fairfax County Park Authority, WMATA (Reagan National Airport and BWI), Prince William County, Powhatan County, Town of Dumfries, Town of Haymarket, City of Manassas Park, City of Manassas, Town of Warrenton, and the City of Suffolk.
“As one of a very few woman-owned engineering firms in the DC metro area, our certification benefits our clients by helping them accomplish their diversity initiatives by working with an established and experienced firm,” added Smith.
The SBA’s national standard of certification is designed to confirm the business is at least 51% owned, operated and controlled by a woman or women. To help provide a level playing field for women business owners, the government limits competition for certain contracts to businesses that participate in the women’s contracting program.
