Nearly 500 Prince William County middle school girls came together for an evening of engagement, empowerment, and STEAM. The fifth-annual SPARKing STEAM event, held on Thursday, April 4 at Colgan High School, introduced students to career opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) fields.

By connecting middle school girls and their parents to professionals who are successful in today’s STEAM workforce, students were inspired to pursue a career they may not have considered before. That evening, professionals served as role models for students as they attended three different sessions that focused on various topics within the STEAM fields.

Students and their parents also attended Core Sessions that included WNBA All-Star Alana Beard of the LA Sparks and Olenka Cullinan with Discovery Education, who is the founder of Rising Tycoons and iStartFirst Bossbabes Bootcamps, and shares her knowledge with youth and other women, motivating and uplifting them to find success in their lives.

The event was made possible with the support of many business and community partners to include Amazon Web Services, BB&T, Boeing Corporation, Corning Foundation, Daly Computers, Discovery Education, Iron Mountain, Lockheed Martin, Louis A. Balboni Science Fund, Micron, Prince William County Service Authority, Progeny Systems, SPARK, the Education Foundation for PWCS, State Farm, ST Math, and Wells Fargo.
