Rising second grade students are honing their reading skills at Marumsco Hills Elementary School over the summer with fun activities and a nautical themed two-week long camp. The camp is operated in conjunction with Shenandoah University. It’s designed to engage students in phonetics, word recognition, and writing exercises, while participating in traditional camp activities like reading stories around a “campfire,” dancing, creating arts and crafts, and singing. The teachers involved are PWCS teachers who are part of a cohort of graduate students working toward a reading specialist certification.
Thanks to the generosity of the Claude Moore Foundation, students can take a book home every day to keep and add to their personal library. The foundation also provides snacks for the students to have during camp.
