Like with most holidays, Halloween and corresponding traditions create vastly more waste than a typical day in the year. Looking at just one element, poor-quality, single-use costumes are among the largest parts of this waste stream (35 million Halloween costumes are thrown away in the U.S each year).
The most sustainable costumes in our closets are the ones we already have! Try copying a costume look by pairing articles of clothing you already own, or host a costume exchange where friends can bring and trade old costume pieces and ideas. You could also visit a thrift shop or vintage store to pick up additional pieces!
