Verification of the Census Worker

  • All census takers have valid ID badges with a photograph, U.S. Department of Commerce watermark and expiration date.
  • Workers may also carry “Census Bureau” bags and other equipment with the Census Bureau logo.

If you still are not certain about the person’s identity, please call the regional Census Center for Virginia: (267) 780-2600.

Most importantly, the Census Bureau will NEVER, under any circumstances, ask to enter your home.

During the 2020 Census, the Census Bureau will never ask you for:

  • Your Social Security number.
  • Money or donations.
  • Anything on behalf of a political party.
  • Your bank or credit card account numbers.

If someone claiming to be from the Census Bureau contacts you via email or phone and asks you for one of
these things, it’s a scam.

Important Dates:

March 12-20: Census forms are mailed or delivered to households.
April 1: By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census.
May – July: Census takers will begin visiting homes that haven’t responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted.
