Bubble tea is one of the hot buttons this year for summer parties and for upcoming weddings as those celebrations slowly come back.  “Bubble Tea bars for parties is our top current trend,” says Victoria Wu of Cakes by Happy Eatery.  “It seems like every other person I talk to lately brings it up.”

Bubble Tea 101 — What is Bubble Tea?

Bubble Tea is “the drink” in East Asia.  It was first introduced in Taiwan and has since grown to be a staple drink worldwide.  Though the drink has been around for decades, bubble tea has become a global craze in recent years and is one of the most Instagrammable beverages on the scene. The classic beverage started as a fresh brewed iced tea shaken together with a shot of simple syrup, splash of cream, shaken, and poured over ice with marbles of tapioca bubbles on the base of the cup.  The drink is famously enjoyed using a fat straw.  Bubble Tea, Boba Tea, and Pearl Tea refers to the same general beverage. Boba is the Chinese translation of bubbles and the pearl shape of the tapiocas.

What makes it unique and what is the fun?

The Bubble Tea menu offerings are plentiful, and the variety of the drinks are similar to milkshakes where flavor combinations are seemingly endless using different ingredient mixtures.

Top Favorites:

  • Classic – Fresh Brewed Tea with a pour of simple syrup and a splash of cream.
  • Taro – Creamy and delicious with a rich vanilla nutty flavor.
  • Thai Iced – Sweet and creamy red tea that turns orange when milk is blended.
  • Brown Sugar – Caramelized brown sugar for a caramel flavor milk tea.

Not a tea drinker – what are other options?

The offerings are endless.  Other “bubbles” include fruit poppers, coffee jellies, and more.  Coffee drinks and fruit smoothies are just as popular to the tea varieties.  The commonalties are the different variety of bubbles enjoyed with a fat straw.
