Many Americans are unaware of the prevalence of hunger in their communities. Without visiting shelters, volunteering at food banks, or participating in food collections, it is easy to assume hunger is rare in a country such as ours. Sadly, 8.4% of Prince William County’s population is food insecure.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Virginia President Fran Edwards is working to alleviate food insecurity through her Special Project, Dare to Dream of No Hunger.  In an effort to support this project the GFWC Woman’s Club of Manassas is sponsoring The ExtravaCANza Challenge – All Aboard the Fight to End Hunger.  This canned goods sculpture contest will take place Saturday, June 3rd on the lawn of the Manassas Museum during the City of Manassas Railway Festival.   The six participating service organizations are challenged to erect a canned goods sculpture that in some way reflects Manassas’s railway heritage.  The club is so pleased to have the following clubs join them in this project: Bull Run Rotary & Interact Club, GFWC Woodbridge Woman’s Club, Kiwanis Club of Manassas Battlefield VA, Lake Jackson Mid-County Lions Club, and Manassas Lioness Lions Club.  The GFWC Woman’s Club of Manassas is providing each organization with a $250 gift card to Giant Food to be used to purchase canned goods.   Organizations may supplement their purchases through their own means. There will be two prizes awarded – the People’s Choice Award and the Mayor’s Award. The public is encouraged to visit the displays and vote on their favorite sculpture.  Each winner will receive a $250 prize that they must use to address community hunger.  Following the competition, the canned goods will be donated to local community food banks.
