The Goddard School-Gainesville

The Goddard Schools throughout the Washington, D.C. region are kicking off a S.T.E.A.M. campaign just in time for National Engineering Week (Feb. 19-23).  Children in all classrooms at The Goddard School in Gainesville are taking S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art and math) learning to all new heights!  Lab coats and goggles are not the usual concepts you teach your preschool-aged children, but it is exactly the kind of S.T.E.A.M. learning The Goddard School curriculum explores regularly, but we will emphasize it even more this week!

At the school’s first STEAM Fair last year, the children explored Architecture.  This year, the Gainesville Goddard School will be focusing heavily on SCIENCE for the week!  The theme is “All Kinds of Science!” Each classroom is going to take on one particular science to explore and learn about through fun hands-on activities.  Here is the breakdown:

Infants (6 weeks-12months):      Marine Biology / Zoology

First Steps (12-18 months):        Physics

Young Toddlers (18-24 months):  Healthcare

Toddlers (24-30 months):            Biology / Anatomy

Get Set (30-36 months):              Animal Sciences (Farming)

Preschool 1:                                     Botany

Preschool 2:                                     Geology / Chemistry

Pre-K 1:                                           Astronomy

Pre-K 2:                                           Earth Science

Parents of The Goddard School will also speak to the Pre-K classes about their science-related or STEAM-related jobs, and provide fun demonstrations.  The Pre-K classes will collaborate in groups and come up with some science experiments to create, analyze and define results therefrom.  In addition to science, all the classes will explore the other letters in “S.T.E.A.M.”, such as technology, engineering, arts and math.  The classrooms’ projects, results and pictures will then be displayed at the end of the week, for all to view.

Throughout the week of Feb. 20 through 23 (we are closed Feb. 19), we will open the doors to the community, hosting an Open House each morning with related hands-on activities for children to do.
