At The Goddard School, year-round, our students continually have fun with STEAM learning (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), while fostering collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking, all of which are 21st century skills.
Once a year, we put heavy focus on one STEAM-related theme for an entire week. This year, the theme for the week-long fair is “Take Flight into STEAM with The Exploration of Aviation”. Children in all classrooms will be doing activities exploring aviation, aerospace flight and wind dynamics.
Special guests will speak to the Pre-Kindergarten and Preschool classes about aviation, aerospace and their aviation-related jobs, and will provide fun props and demonstrations. All of the special guest speakers are family members, and include ranked military, such as Retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel C-130 cargo plane pilot Lance Peterson and Retired Air Force F-15 Fighter pilot Andrea Themely.
The Pre-Kindergarten projects are “Exploring Wind Tubes”,,and “The Air Around Us.” These older classrooms will research the history of flight. They will take on scientific experiments exploring aerodynamics, and the physics and mechanics behind flight. They will use wind tubes, parachute drops and build flying vessels to test. Then, they will record their observations and findings.
There is an Open House every day this week (except Presidents Day, for which the school is closed). Related hands-on activities will be available in every classroom for parents and children of the community to partake in! This is a great opportunity for families to visit The Goddard School and explore aviation in a family friendly way.
The Open House will be held Feb. 19-22, from 9:30 a. m. to 12:00 noon each day.
Owners Greg and Lisa O’Brien strongly believe that guiding children in early years through play-based learning sets the stage for success in school and life. They recognize the importance of a safe and nurturing learning environment. The Goddard School’s presence in this community is raising the bar for what options are available to families in Gainesville and surrounding areas.
