The Spot On Mill Street to Be Featured on “America’s Best Restaurants”

Occoquan restaurant The Spot On Mill Street will be hosting a visit from America’s Best Restaurants (ABR) this month.

America’s Best Restaurants, a national media and marketing company focusing on bringing attention to local, independently-owned restaurants, will bring its ABR Roadshow to the restaurant on Aug. 22.  Popular dishes will be highlighted, along with an extensive on-camera interview with owners Denise and David Ormsby about the restaurant’s special place in the community. The episode will be aired extensively on social media channels at a later date.

On their first date, the Ormsbys posed the question to each other, “If money was no object, what would you do?” The answer for both of them was to own a ‘neighborhood hangout’. They thought it would be just a little coffee shop, but it ended up being a “pretty extensive bar,” Denise notes.

The building the restaurant is housed in was built in 1750 and was used as a prison during the Revolutionary War. The Spot On Mill Street opened the first day of 2020, and became a community hub during the pandemic just a few months later. “We kind of turned it into a little community store, a corner market,” Denise says, adding that they also delivered, fed elementary school children and their families until the schools figured out a plan, and even shipped supplies like diapers, sanitizers and masks to those who could not make it in.

“Our biggest sellers during covid were toilet paper and wine,” she says.

An Army veteran from a long line of those who served their country, Denise won Local Businessperson Of The Year this year from Alignable, a small-business network. She also is a V3 Certified company, recognized for her commitment to hiring, training and retaining veterans. The Spot On Mill Street has won numerous local awards including being included in Northern Virginia Magazine’s ‘Best Of’ for several years in a row.

They offer outdoor seating year-round, with either ceiling fans or blankets and heaters to keep patrons comfortable. Over 150 wines are available that they claim aren’t available anywhere else in a ten-mile radius, and they have a few bourbon options that are no longer in production.

“We have the best bourbon, gin, scotch, tequila, and vodka selection in Prince William County. Period,” Denise says.

Popular menu items that may be featured on the episode include the flatbreads, the charcuterie boards (“we’re known for those,” she says) and the “best burger in town”, topped with seasoned pork and bacon.

America’s Best Restaurants will be filming on location on Tuesday Aug. 22 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.  The restaurant’s finished episode premiere date will be announced on their Facebook page and will be featured on America’s Best Restaurants’ website.
