Thomas Duling graduated summa cum laude from Ohio University in 1969 and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia in 1972. After a brief stint with the Internal Revenue Service as an estate attorney, then nine months of active duty with the U.S. Army, he was honorably discharged as a Captain.

In July 1973 he began his private practice career with predecessor law firm Compton, Latimer, Compton, and Compton. He became a full partner in 1978, and through several name changes became the Duling of Compton and Duling in 1978. Since then, he has been a member of the firm.

What is your job and how long have you been with Compton & Duling?

I am an attorney with the firm that specializes in estate matters.

Briefly describe what a day in your work life looks like.

I start my day by a review of messages and emails, and meet many people with the common theme being preparing for death or disability. I do estate planning documents, which is planning for the inevitable that is death or disability.

What is the best part of working for Compton & Duling?

The client. Every situation is different and the same. Since death is certain, the best approach is to plan for it, which is what I do.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

My wife and I are avid swing dancers and bonsai artists. Dancing once or twice a week for 15 years and many trees to turn into living art.

What was one of your proudest moments working for Compton & Duling?

I have been with the firm for 47 continuous years. I love the work and love working here.
