The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC) is pleased to again participate in Try Transit Week and Car Free Day – two events that encourage people to find alternatives to driving solo and award prizes for pledging to do so!

The eighth annual Try Transit Week will be held September 19-23. The week-long educational event is designed to reduce the use of single-occupancy vehicles in favor of buses, trains, vanpools and ferries. Try Transit Week is organized by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

Even if you already use transit or other modes of travel, you can pledge to take part in the events and be entered into drawings to win prizes, including the grand prize of a pair of round-trip tickets aboard Amtrak’s Northeast Regional. PRTC will be giving away three SmarTrip cards already pre-loaded with $50 or $25 for your next ride!

“We have seen congestion and travel times continue to increase across the Commonwealth, and we are working with our transit partners to provide alternative modes of travel,” said Jennifer Mitchell, Director of Virginia’s Department of Rail and Public Transportation. “Try Transit Week is a great way to remind passengers about the benefits of public transportation, and to encourage those who have yet to try transit to do so.”

DRPT and transit operators across Virginia are spreading the word about public transportation accessibility and its numerous benefits. Public transportation riders not only save time and money, but they can multi-task, avoiding all of the hassles of traveling by car alone and arriving at their destinations stress- and hassle-free.

World Car Free Day also falls during Try Transit Week. On Thursday, September 22, motorists are encouraged to give up their cars for a day and use alternate modes of travel, including transit, biking, and walking. Car Free Day is sponsored locally by Commuter Connections.
