Transportation Improvements Happening Around the County

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently received a transportation update showing the progress on road projects across the county.

The report showed the status of Prince William Department of Transportation administered projects, as well as the Virginia Department of Transportation, or VDOT, administered projects.

County administered projects include:

Improvements to the intersection of Burwell Road and Fitzwater Drive: Rights-of-way and easement acquisitions have been completed. The transportation department applied to VDOT for a land use permit in August. Relocation of the Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative, or NOVEC, and Verizon utilities will take 60 to 90 days. Construction is expected to begin in December after all utilities have been relocated. Project completion is expected in June 2016.

Widening of Va. 28 – Phase I, between Linton Hall Road and Fitzwater Drive: The project completion date is set for the summer of 2016. Coordination with property owners is ongoing. The road’s sub-base, or foundation, is 75 percent complete. Sound wall construction along Va. 28 is 25 percent complete, as are blasting activities.

Widening of Va. 28 – Phase II, between Fitzwater Drive and Infantry Lane: Final design plans are under review by VDOT. Utility relocation is expected to begin in November with completion date set for November 2016.

Hellwig Park Entrance Improvement: Prince William County Department of Public Works construction crews have started work on the relocated entrance. Verizon relocation is ongoing. Completion date is set for November of this year.

Minnieville Road – Spriggs Road to Va. 234: Construction to widen the road from two to four lanes is scheduled to begin in 2016 after the acquisitions of 58 rights-of-way have been completed. The completed project will include a sidewalk and an asphalt trail. Environmental issues need to be addressed where the road crosses Powells Creek. Utility relocations are scheduled to begin in December. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2016.

Purcell Road Improvements: All rights-of-way and utility easements have been recorded on the project to add two left-turn lanes on Route 234 onto Purcell. Construction advertisement is scheduled for October with contract award expected in November of this year. The construction completion date is set for the fall of 2016.

Logmill Road Improvements: A contract to improve the road has been awarded. Comcast and NOVEC have completed their utility relocations. Verizon utility relocation is underway and rights-of-way negotiations are ongoing. Construction is scheduled to begin in September, with completion expected in August 2016.

Gideon Drive Sidewalk – Dale Boulevard to Opitz Drive: Construction is expected to be completed in December of this year.

Prince William County Parkway – Old Bridge Road to Minnieville Road: The median restoration with colored concrete imprinting is complete, as are the sidewalks and trails along the road. Due to repairs on existing pavement, the completion date was moved to October.

Antietam Road Sidewalk: Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2016.

Heritage Center Parkway and U.S. 1 Improvements: Final plans are approved. Construction east of U.S. 1 is ongoing, and VDOT has approved the final street light wiring plan. Verizon utility relocation along U.S. 1 has been completed. Construction is expected to be complete in late September of this year.

Improvements Fuller Road-Fuller Heights Road: The project at the entrance to Quantico Marine Corps Base has been restarted. Plans are slated to be ready for construction bids this fall.

Blackburn Road Sidewalk: Rights-of-way and easements have been acquired. Coordination with Verizon to relocate its utilities is in conflict with the project, but construction is expected to begin in November 2016.

U.S. 1 – Featherstone Road to Mary’s Way: Storm water management design is ongoing. The preparation of an environmental impact study is underway. Preliminary roadway plans are scheduled to be submitted to VDOT in October.

U.S. 1 – Neabsco Mills Road to Featherstone Road: The relocation of Comcast and Dominion Virginia Power utilities is complete. The construction of a sidewalk and asphalt trail is ongoing. Construction is broken into three phases:

  • Phase I – Neabsco Mills road to Dale Boulevard – widening underway
  • Phase II – Dale Boulevard to Delaware Drive – widening under underway
  • Phase III – Delaware Drive to Featherstone Road – widening under underway

The final completion date for all phases is scheduled for summer of 2016.

Va. 234/U.S. 1 – Turn Lane Modification: The request to award the construction contract to the winning bidder was presented to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors on Sept. 8. Construction is expected to begin this fall with the completion date expected in the fall of 2016.

Powell’s Creek Pedestrian Footbridge: The project is in the design phase with construction targeted to begin in June 2016. The scheduled completion date is November 2016.

Projects being administered by VDOT include:

U.S. 29/Linton Hall Road Interchange: The major construction to the project to widen U.S. 29 to six lanes with an interchange at Linton Hall Road is complete. The road opened in July.

I-66 Widening to Haymarket: The project between U.S. 29 in Gainesville to U.S. 15 in Haymarket, which includes one High Occupancy Vehicle Lane (HOV) and one general purpose lane in each direction, is underway. The project is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2016.

I-66/U.S. 15 Interchange Reconstruction: The final design and land acquisition are underway and construction activities have begun.

U.S. 1/Va. 123 Interchange: The rights-of-way acquisition phase of the project to bridge Va. 123 over U.S. 1 is underway while the utility undergrounding proceeds. Phase I of the project is scheduled to go out for bid this fall.

Aden Road Bridge: The project to replace the bridge began with a public hearing in the fall of 2013. Requests for bids went out in March and the bridge was closed in April. A contract to build a new bridge is underway.

Dale Boulevard Safety Projects include:

  • Lindendale Drive – The construction of a left-turn lane and a traffic signal upgrade are underway with project completion scheduled for late 2015.
  • Hillendale Drive – The design phase for the project to add a southbound left-turn lane is underway. Advertisements for bids went out in June.
  • Delaney Road – Intersection at Dale Boulevard improvements that include signal upgrades, sidewalks, ramps and crosswalks that meet requirements for the Americans With Disabilities Act requirements are complete.

Brentsville Road Bridge: Work on the major bridge rehabilitation project is underway and a detour is in place. The project is scheduled to be completed late this year.
