COVID-19 has forced many of us to become intimately familiar with our homes. Home improvement projects are at an all-time high, because we all understand that our home environments have a tremendous impact on our mental health and well-being.
The Oasis Alliance (OA) is a small, Woodbridge-based non-profit that leverages the power of interior design to help trauma survivors improve their mental health and wellbeing and thrive. The non-profit started as a ministry out of Move Church (Woodbridge) and quickly grew into a 501(c)(3) organization. Its principal officers are home stagers and interior designers dedicated to using their craft for the good of the community.
With the help of a volunteer therapist, local referring partners, and a corporate furniture donor, the Oasis Alliance takes empty and or/triggering spaces and makes them feel like home. Survivors of all kinds (formerly homeless families, sexually abused children, cancer survivors, homeless veterans, etc.) have benefited from their services. The Oasis Alliance creates spaces that are comfortable and therapeutic, and reflective of the beneficiaries’ personal style and taste. The OA formula provides “needs” and “wants” combines with sweat equity from the beneficiary. This effort catalyzes feelings of pride that become a powerful driver for personal empowerment. When a home is safe and functional, as well as affirming, dignifying, and even beautiful, it becomes an OASIS and a stable foundation for wellness.
To date, the relatively new organization has helped 20+ families. Recently, in conjunction with Hearts of Empowerment, they completed an art and décor installation for the Friends of Guest House, a 20-bed re-entry/rehabilitation shelter serving women in the DMV area.
This little organization is making big waves in the community and has more referrals than it can take on. The CEO is passionate about the mission and would like to run the organization full-time when funding allows. The long-term strategy is to build out a national “alliance” of design professionals who desire to serve in their own communities in a similar capacity.
