Traffic is once again flowing, unimpeded by construction, along the stretch of U.S. 1 between Neabsco Mills and Featherstone Roads.
During a recent ribbon cutting ceremony to note the completion of construction, Prince William Chairman Corey Stewart said the project is part of a whole that includes work on U.S. 1 between Fairfax and Stafford Counties. “Another part of the puzzle is now in place with the construction of this stretch of Route 1. I don’t think there’s any other community in the United States that has revitalized, redone and widened such a long portion of Route 1.”
The widening project improved pedestrian accessibility by providing a 10-foot asphalt trail along the southbound side of the road and a 6-foot sidewalk along the northbound side of U.S. 1.
The $48.5 million project along 2.06 miles of road was started in May 2013, and it includes reconfiguration of the intersection at U.S. 1 at Dale Boulevard-Rippon Boulevard with a triple left turn approach; realignment and widening Dale Boulevard-Rippon Boulevard; and a major box culvert at Cow Branch.
New traffic signals were also added at the intersections of U.S. 1 and Dale Boulevard-Rippon Boulevard, Delaware Drive, Maryland Avenue, Opitz Boulevard and Featherstone Road.
To add to the aesthetics of the community, all of the utilities that were above ground were placed underground and the median is stamped concrete to resemble red brick.
Supervisor Frank J. Principi said improving the stretch of road from four to six travel lanes will “clearly reduce traffic” along the road that carries 40,000 to 50,000 cars per day. “We’ve already seen it in this neighborhood. It’ll get motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists to and from where they’re going more safely. Widening these roads will expand our tax base. It will allow us to expand existing businesses and bring in new businesses and high-paying jobs. It will also enhance the look and feel of our community.
