Reopening of Aquatic/Fitness Centers
A message from Seth Hendler-Voss, Director of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism
The Chinn and Sharron Baucom Dale City Aquatic/Fitness Centers will be reopened to members starting on Saturday, Aug. 1. The original plan was to reopen on Aug. 24, but it was moved up because summer camp attendance is down. Both facilities will be opened in phases:
- Phase 1: Self-directed fitness areas only: Aug. 1
- Phase 2: Lap swimming only: date TBD; dependent on filling staff vacancies and completing in-service training
- Phase 3: Group fitness classes;,TBD; dependent on instructor availability and COVID case trend (in consultation with Health Department and EOC)
- Phase 4: General pool use, TBD; dependent on guard availability and COVID case trend (in consultation with Health Department and EOC)
Members can register online for 90 minute time slots. Facility capacity will be limited to conform with the Virginia Forward Blueprint Guidelines. About 90% of members maintained their memberships, but their bank drafts were frozen and their membership period extended. Non-member, drop-in use will not permitted at this time. Facilities will close in the middle of the day for deep cleaning. Everyone entering will have their temperature taken and verbally screened. Masks will be required when not exercising.
The centers will utilize lifeguards who are already certified. Outdoor pools would have required a massive, close contact training effort to certify new guards.
Fall program options are in development for these centers as well as other sites that are responsive to the changing needs of the community. These options will be shared with the County Executive in the near future.
