What was once a scenic golf course along the Occoquan has been overhauled into a 100-acre picturesque event venue: The Ospreys at Belmont Bay.
“It’s hard to describe the feeling my fiancé and I felt as we walked into the Osprey’s,” said Deveny Mendez. Mendez will be married there Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020. “The second you pull into the driveway you see the beautiful lake with the beautiful pergola. We could see ourselves getting married there. It was so peaceful and calm and just spoke to my fiancé and me. When you walk into the venue it is so open and welcoming. We loved the open layout of the dance floor/bar area, as well as the separate area for dinner.”
Hunter Wood, general manager, said that’s the exact review he had hoped for when the traditional golf course clubhouse was transformed into an elegant event space. He said that although weddings make up about 75 percent of their business, they also host bridal and baby showers, birthday parties, anniversaries, business gatherings and other special events.
The course opened in 1997. When it closed for the season in December 2015, the owners (who still own the property) decided to renovate. The former clubhouse, with traditional dark green walls, heavy drapes, thick carpets, and booth seating was transformed into an open airy space.
New flooring. New paint. New floorplan.
“We wanted to make the place a big blank canvas to fit anybody’s wedding,” said Wood. “It is very neutral. It can look casual or dressed-up, high-end sophisticated … and anything in between.
The indoor venue can accommodate 146 guests for a seated dinner with a dance floor. Weather permitting, ceremonies are held outside. The wedding party follows a flagstone aisle to a pergola framed by an unobstructed waterfront view of Belmont Bay and the Occoquan River.
Although food is prepared offsite and provided by outside vendors, he said caterers have complimented the venue’s full kitchen and loading dock.
And, unlike other venues, Wood said, The Osprey’s provides spacious suites for both the bride’s and groom’s party.
“We loved that they had a space for the bridesmaids AND the groomsmen,” said Mendez. “It was important that my fiancé and his men also had a space to relax and get ready before the wedding.”
Nicole Williams and her husband were married Saturday, May 25, 2019. They worked at The Osprey’s while they were in high school. When they returned to tour the venue for their wedding, the fell in love with the new space.
“The view was incredible,” she said. “My wedding was in the morning, so the sun was out, the grass was green with clear blue skies. Just a beautiful day. The wedding would not have been the same anywhere else. Our wedding photos of the day came out gorgeous!”
The Osprey’s at Belmont Bay is located at 401 Belmont Bay Drive, Woodbridge, near Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Veterans Memorial Park. For more information, visit ospreysgolf.com.
