With August marking the final stretch of summer travel and the return of many commuters to the office, Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is encouraging area residents to save on transportation costs by leaving the driving behind, even as Virginia gas prices average 38% over 2025 costs. Through the #VREMakesCents campaign, the rail agency is spreading the word that traveling by VRE can save commuters and their families thousands of dollars per year — keeping more money in riders’ pockets and less spent on fuel, parking, and other driving-related expenses.
The series of messages will be displayed on gas station advertising throughout the Northern Virginia region and across social media, highlighting the many benefits of traveling by VRE and other forms of transit. VRE’s single trip, 10-trip, and monthly ticket options provide savings for all commuters, whether they’re riding every day or just a few times each week. In addition, VRE’s “Kids Ride Free” program ensures VRE is an affordable and convenient travel option for the whole family to make the most out of summer travel.

VRE riders can save thousands of dollars each year while enjoying a comfortable, dependable trip that lets them skip congestion, avoid vehicle wear-and-tear, and spend more time with family instead of sitting behind the wheel.
