A workshop to learn the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease is being held on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at Westminster at Lake Ridge.
Memory loss or behavioral changes are often dismissed as side effects of normal aging. The workshop teaches about the facts of Alzheimer’s and the importance of early detection. Diagnosing the disease in the early stages allows people to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future.
The 10 warning signs include:
1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
2. Challenges in planning or solving problems
3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure
4. Confusion with time or place
5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
6. New problems with words in speaking or writing
7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
8. Decreased or poor judgment
9. Withdrawal from work or social activities
10. Changes in mood and personality
One in eight older Americans, some 5.4 million people, is living with Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the nation that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.
The “Know the 10 Signs of Alzheimer’s” workshop is Jan. 30, 1:30pm to 4:00pm at Westminster at Lake Ridge, 121911 Clipper Dr., Lake Ridge, VA.
