The General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Virginia recently purchased a school bus for the Armed Services YMCA Hampton Roads.   The project was initiated by 2020-2022 GFWC Virginia President Dale Fisher (GFWC Woman’s Club of Manassas) and State Project Chairman Joyce Jolly (Woodbridge Woman’s Club) after hearing about the mission of the ASYMCA.

Headquartered in Woodbridge and with branches across the United States, the Armed Services YMCA provides innovative, interactive programs and services designed especially for junior enlisted service members, their spouses, and their children.

Devoted to nurturing the well-being of the military community, services focus on child development initiatives, family support systems, providing assistance during challenging situations, and honoring the impact of service.  The school bus will be used to transport military children to before and after school programs, field trips, and summer camps.

During the two-year administration, the 129 federated clubs across the Commonwealth held numerous fundraisers to reach a goal of $35,000. Through raffles, fashion shows, “buy a seat on the bus” campaigns and Bunco parties, the organization exceeded its goal.  With a generous contribution from Advanced Management Strategies Group, Inc. in Dumfries and with additional individual and business donations, GFWC Virginia raised $55,000 for the purchase.

The bus was delivered to the Armed Services YMCA Hampton Roads in April 2023, and will now assist in providing military children with opportunities for educational enrichment and social and emotional growth.
