Here is information about the winning artists and their work:

Nancy Hannans  (1st Place)

Artwork: “Swimming With Turtles”

Nancy Hannans is a painter who lives in southern Maryland.  She received her BFA from Boston University, College of Fine Arts, and her MFA from Old Dominion University.  Her paintings communicate the beauty and wisdom of the human spirit, personified by women.  Hannans combines a love for storytelling and symbolism to communicate that we are all interconnected, and celebrate our common humanity.  The women she portrays embody all cultures and races, symbolizing wisdom, strength, honesty, courage and perseverance.  Her inspiration for this piece stems from our oneness with the natural world.

Chris Fedderson (tied for 2nd Place)

Artwork:  “Nature’s Firework”

Chris is a Virginia-based photographer and gathers images at forests and parklands in the local area and around the country as he travels for Art Fairs and photo shoots. Throughout his life — whether shooting snaps of vacations or gathering images on serious photo shoots — he has always gravitated toward seeing and exploring Nature’s minutia. He has worked in a variety of artistic mediums over the years, but his heart always comes back to exploring and photographing our natural world. His inspiration for this piece stems from the exploration of intricate textures, repeating patterns, visual rhythms, and the emotion inherent in the infinite occurrences of Nature’s minutia; the fascinating, essential elements that integrate into our cohesive, synergistic — and essential — ecosystem.

Kathy Strauss (tied for 2nd Place)

Artwork: “Blue and White”

Kathy is a member of the Associate Artists at the Workhouse – a part of the Workhouse Art Center in Lorton, VA where she exhibits her work and is a course instructor. In addition to the Associates, she shows her work at various art festivals and other galleries throughout the Washington Metropolitan area and mid-Atlantic. Her work has garnered numerous awards.

She loves telling stories through her photography and art. Her design background gives her imagery a distinct clean style that brings each image to life. Composing each shot with precision and harmony – sensitive to graphic composition and each of the core design principles – she’s always looking at what makes each scene spark and how to connect the viewer to the piece. This piece came about because Kathy “wanted to see what happened when I took pieces of photos and placed them together in a circle or mirrored the images. What happened was the imagery became magic…”
