Next order deadline is March 11 at House of Mercy … Anyone can order

MANASSAS, Va. – March orders for SHARE food packages can be placed now through Monday, March 11, at the House of Mercy, a nonprofit organization in Manassas.

Packages contain a variety of frozen meats and other foods and are offered at a low cost to help families extend their grocery budget, said Kellie Ross, executive director at House of Mercy. “Anyone can order no matter your income. All that’s asked is that you volunteer at least two hours in the community,” she said.

House of Mercy teamed this year with SHARE (Self Help And Resource Exchange), a nonprofit food and community-building network sponsored by the Archdiocese of Washington, to bring high quality meats and produce to local families at a low cost, Ross said. “The packages are priced at about half their grocery store value. For only $22, you can buy about $45 worth of food.”

March orders must be picked up on Saturday, March 23, between 9 a.m. and noon at House of Mercy, located at 8170 Flannery Court. Payments can be made by credit and debit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover), cash, food stamps or money order. No checks are accepted. Orders must be placed in person except when paying by credit or debit card, which can be done by phone, Ross said.

The March menu includes three packages: the Value package for $20, the Cooking for Two for $16 and the Easter Ham package for $27. House of Mercy also adds a $2 fuel surcharge to all packages to cover transportation costs, Ross said.

The Value and Cooking for Two packages include one pound of tilapia filets, two pounds of Tyson® chicken thighs and one pound of pork rib patties. The Value package also includes three-quarters of a pound of beef steak strips and four Edwards® mini cherry pies, while the Cooking for Two package contains a green bean steamer pack, two Edwards® mini cherry pies and three pounds of white potatoes. The Easter Ham is an eight- to nine-pound Cook’s® premium quality hickory-smoked honey ham, spiral sliced with bone in.

House of Mercy receives no profit from the sale of the packages, which it sells at cost, Ross said. House of Mercy buys them from SHARE based on orders received, which purchasers pay for in advance. SHARE food packages can be ordered each month, with monthly deadlines and pickup times.
